Driver injured in wreck on I-635 ramp

A woman was injured this morning in a wreck in Wyandotte County.

Roeland Park, Kan., resident Jamie Lynn Lopez lost control of her vehicle at around 6:30 a.m. this morning while traveling on the northbound Interstate 635 exit ramp to Interstate 70 westbound.

The vehicle struck a KDOT sign and rolled over before coming to rest on its wheels.

Lopez was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital with an injury.

One injured in weekend crash

A Kansas City, Kan., resident was injured in a one-car accident on Interstate 635 Saturday evening.

The accident happened just before midnight on Saturday.

Arquimides Quintana-Balderrama was driving his vehicle on northbound I-635 when his vehicle left the road and struck a barrier wall. Quintana-Balderrama was trapped in the vehicle and a rescue unit had to be called.

The driver was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital.

No other car was involved and no one else was injured.

I-635 ramps to be closed tonight

A few exit / entrance ramps on Interstate 635 will be closed tonight into tomorrow morning.

The ramps on northbound I-635 to State Avenue; southbound I-635 to Parallel Parkway; Parallel Parkway to southbound I-635 and southbound to I-635 to Kansas Highway 32 will be closed for pavement marking work.

Closures will start at 8 p.m. tonight and will not be reopened until 5 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Traffic Notes: Ramps near I-635 closed

A few traffic notes that could shape your travel plans tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

Multiple ramps on Interstate 635 will be closed for pavement marking. The ramps on I-635 range from Merriam, Metropolitan and State Avenue.

More from the Kansas Department of Transportation:

The ramps on southbound I-635 to Metropolitan, Metropolitan to northbound I-635, Shawnee to southbound I-635, southbound I-635 to Merriam and Merriam to southbound I-635 will be closed for pavement marking work on Wednesday, July 7 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Project work is scheduled to be completed on Wednesday, July 7. (New 7-6-10)

The ramps from westbound I-70 to southbound I-635 and eastbound State Avenue to southbound I-635 will be closed for pavement marking work between 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 6 and 5:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 7. Project work is scheduled to be completed on Wednesday, July 7.

KCMO man injured in Monday accident

A Kansas City, Mo., man was injured Monday evening in an accident that occurred on Interstate 635 in Wyandotte County.

The single vehicle, heading northbound just south of the Missouri River in Kansas City, Kan., left the road for an unknown reason, returned back on the road and then hit a ditch.

Christopher Tilford was the lone person in the vehicle, which was a 1997 Ford truck. He was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital after the accident.

Tilford was not wearing his seat-belt at the time of the accident.

The accident was reported to the Kansas Highway Patrol just before 7:30 p.m. Monday evening.

Cell phone distracts driver, causes accident

A cell phone resulted in a car accident that injured one in Kansas City, Kan., Sunday evening.

The accident was reported shortly after 9 p.m. to the Kansas Highway Patrol. It occurred on southbound Interstate 635, just north of Parallel Parkway.

Sarah Doyle, the injured party, was distracted by her cellphone and sideswiped the vehicle of Jacob Wilcox.

Doyle was taken to the University of Kansas Hospital with minor injuries, where she was expected to recover. Wilcox was not injured in the accident.

The cell phone was mentioned in the Kansas HIghway Patrol's official report as the specific reason why the accident happened. It's unknown if the driver was speaking on the phone or texting.

Beginning today, I-635 ramps to be closed overnight

Evening and early morning commuters will have to take note of several ramp closures involving Interstate 635, Interstate 70 and State Avenue this week.

Beginning on Monday, portions of the exit ramps on I-635 at I-70 and State Avenue will be closed overnight for pavement marking work.

Work, weather permitted, will be finished on early Friday morning at 6 a.m.

Monday, June 28 – 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

• Full closure of the westbound I-70 to northbound I-635 ramp.

• Full closure of the westbound I-70 to southbound I-635 ramp.

• Full closure of the westbound State Avenue to northbound I-635 ramp.

• Full closure of the eastbound State Avenue to northbound I-635 ramp.

Tuesday, June 29 – 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

• Full closure of the westbound I-70 to northbound I-635 ramp.

• Full closure of the northbound I-635 to westbound I-70 ramp.

• Full closure of the eastbound I-70 to northbound I-635 ramp.

• Full closure of the eastbound State Avenue to southbound I-635 ramp.

Wednesday, June 30 – 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

• Full closure of the northbound I-635 to State Avenue ramp.

• Full closure of the westbound State Avenue to southbound I-635 ramp.

• Full closure of the southbound I-635 to westbound I-70 ramp.

• Full closure of the eastbound I-70 to southbound I-635 ramp.

Thursday, July 1 – 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

• Full closure of the southbound I-635 to State Avenue ramp.

• Full closure of the southbound I-635 to eastbound I-70 ramp.

TRAFFIC ALERT: WyCo portion of I-635 will be reduced for two months

Beginning tonight at 6:30 p.m., northbound Interstate 635 from Merriam Lane in Johnson County to Georgia Avenue in Wyandotte County will be reduced to one lane due to a pavement marking project.

The project is expected to be completed on Saturday, August 14.

From this time, ramps along the highway could be closed from Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and/or 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. The ramps could possibly be closed 24 hours on Saturday.

The Kansas Department of Transportation will use message boards to alert travelers when a ramp is closed.

Drivers should expect delays in driving and will be required to use alternate routes during ramp closures.

Update on yesterday's accident on I-635

The Monday morning accident that closed a ramp on Interstate 635 injured one.

Shawn Naiman of Broken Arrow, Okla., was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital yesterday after his semi-truck rolled over.

The accident report mentions that Naiman was driving too fast and tipped over near the curve.

No one else was injured.

Rollover accident shuts down ramp

A car accident involving a rolled over tanker has closed down the entrance ramp from northbound Interstate 635 to Kansas Avenue.

The ramp will be closed at least for a few hours as cleanup continues at the scene. As far as injuries, none have been reported just yet.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and find an alternate route.

Man falls to death on I-635

A man fell "35 to 50' feet on I-635 Northbound late last night.

The Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department was called out to Northbound I-635 near the Missouri River where they found a man who fell 35-50 from a catwalk under the bridge to the railroad tracks.

The man died instantly from the fall. No other information about the incident or the victim was available.

Emergency units were called to the scene before 11:30 p.m. last night.

Vehicle fire on I-635, State Avenue

The Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department is responding to a vehicle fire near Interstate 635 and State Avenue.

The vehicle is pulled over to the side.

A female driver and a small baby have vacated the car and were not injured in the fire.

I-635 lanes to be closed tomorrow

From 4–9 a.m. tomorrow morning, highway work will close down some lanes on Interstate 635 in Wyandotte County.

The highway will be reduced to one lane going northbound and southbound between Parallel Parkway and Leavenworth Road. The reason for the lane closure is for KC Scout sign work.

All lanes on Southbound I-635 will be closed 10 minutes at some time between 6:45 and 7:45 a.m.

Delays should be expected for drivers who use I-635.

UPDATE: Eight-year-old dies from earlier car accident

Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department officials released more information about today's accident on I-70 East at I-635.

Among the worst news – an eight-year-old has died as a result of injuries.

Three children were ejected from a car, according to witnesses on the scene. An eight-year-old girl, 10-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl were transported to the emergency room of Children's Mercy Hospital.

Meanwhile, a two-year-old was also transported to Children's Mercy Hospital, along with an adult, who is listed as the mother of the two-year-old.

At the hospital, the eight-year-old girl died from injuries.

According to Craig Duke, battalion chief and spokesperson for the KCKFD, four children were in the vehicle, along with two adults.

Here's his statement (via email) on the accident:

Fire crews on scene within five minutes reported one vehicle accident with two adult occupants and four children occupants between the ages of two and 12 years of age.

Information received from witnesses indicated that three of the children had been ejected from the vehicle during the accident. Off-duty JOCO Sheriff Officer and KU Medical Center Nurse on scene administering CPR to one of the victims. Crews on scene reported 3 victims unconscious upon their arrival. 

One EMS unit transported 1 female (8 yrs old) emergency to Children’s; one EMS unit transported 1 male (10 yrs old) and 1 female (12 yrs old) emergency to Children’s Mercy. One EMS units transported 1 male (2 yrs old) and mother of 2 year old to Children’s Mercy.

Eight year old female transported emergency later succumbed to her injuries.
No update on status of other patients.

Driver removed from vehicle in I-635 accident

A car rolled over on Southbound 635 just after 5 p.m.

The car accident was caused by heavy snow fall. The car rolled over on the highway just near the Westbound Interstate 70 exit ramp.

A heavy response unit was called to the scene to remove the driver from the vehicle. The driver was unconscious for about 15 minutes and had to be removed from the vehicle.
